Five Light Distribution Patterns, Easily Achieved with a Single Film

2026-07-20

In lighting design, different application scenarios require different light distribution patterns.

Wall lighting requires polarized light, hallways need long, narrow light beams, display cases require bidirectional light distribution, and commercial spaces need low glare… Traditional approaches often involve switching between different lenses or fixtures, which is costly, complicates inventory management, and makes installation and maintenance more troublesome.

MOS film is a new solution to this problem.

What is a MOS film?

MOS film is a new type of optical light distribution film. By adding a layer of high-precision nano-optical film to the light-emitting surface of a luminaire, it is possible to alter the luminaire’s light distribution.

Compared to traditional light-diffusing films, MOS films offer a wider variety of light distribution patterns while maintaining a high light transmittance of over 80%, enabling more flexible light pattern switching without compromising luminous efficacy.

More importantly, simply replacing a single MOS film allows the same luminaire to offer a variety of different light distribution patterns, significantly reducing product development and inventory management costs.

Five Light Distribution Patterns, Easily Achieved with a Single Film

Single Asymmetric Film

When standard light fixtures are installed close to a wall, some of the light is easily wasted on the floor or ceiling. Single Asymmetric Film shifts the entire downward-directed light beam to one side, allowing more light to be directed onto the wall and improving light utilization.

Applications: Wall-mounted lights, accent lighting for walls, cabinet lights

DoubleAsymmetric Film

The Double Asymmetric Film deflects the light beam to both the left and right sides simultaneously. A single light fixture can cover both sides of the illuminated area, making it ideal for environments that require lighting in both directions, such as storage containers, shelves, and aisles.

Applications: Supermarket shelves, display case lighting, long hallways

Linear Film

When a traditional circular light beam illuminates a hallway, the center is bright while the sides are dark, resulting in dark areas along the edges. Linear Film stretches the circular light beam into a long rectangle, allowing the light to better conform to the shape of the hallway, significantly improving lighting uniformity while reducing the number of fixtures required.

Applications: Hotel hallways, office corridors, commercial walkways

Diffuser Film

Due to their light distribution design, some lighting fixtures are prone to issues such as yellowed or overly sharp edges on the light beam. Diffuser Film provides secondary light diffusion, making the edges of the light beam appear more natural and soft while reducing the yellowing effect, resulting in more comfortable overall lighting.

Applications: Commercial Lighting, Display Lighting, Indoor Accent Lighting

Anti-Glare Film

Glare has always been a major issue in commercial and office lighting. Anti-Glare Film reduces high-angle glare output by controlling stray light at angles greater than 65°, effectively lowering the UGR value to make lighting more comfortable while maintaining high luminous efficacy.

Applications: Office lighting, shopping mall lighting, museums, high-end retail spaces

The Advantages of MOS Film

A wider variety of light distribution patterns

Not only does it provide polarization, but it also offers a variety of functions such as diffusion, stretching, and glare reduction, allowing a single film to meet a wide range of lighting needs.

One Light, Multiple Light Distributions

There is no need to redesign the luminaire or replace the lens. Simply replacing the MOS film allows for quick switching between different light distribution patterns, significantly enhancing product flexibility.

Greater adaptability

Unlike traditional polarizing filters, which come in fixed sizes, MOS films can be freely cut to size as needed, making them easily compatible with the vast majority of lighting fixtures on the market and significantly reducing development costs.

Unlocking Endless Possibilities for a Single Light

From unidirectional polarization to bidirectional illumination; from rectangular light spots to soft diffusion; from precise light control to glare reduction. A single MOS film changes not only the direction of light but also the possibilities for lighting fixture design.
