What are the advantages of rectangular light distribution compared with circular light distribution?
What is a rectangular light distribution?
Rectangular beam pattern, simply put, refers to a light pattern that produces a square-shaped spot. It is typically described using two angles, such as 20° × 50°, which is a classic example of a rectangular beam pattern. In practice, the light spot appears as an elliptical shape that is nearly square.
Advantages of rectangular light distribution over circular light distribution
Taking our Matrix series as an example, we conducted an optical simulation in a hallway to compare it with a conventional circular light spot.

Advantage 1: Higher light utilization. With conventional circular light patterns, a significant amount of light is scattered outside the target area, resulting in waste. In contrast, the 20°x50° beam pattern precisely concentrates light energy within a narrow, elongated area, minimizing unnecessary loss.
Advantage 2: Superior illuminance uniformity. Circular light distribution often results in excessive brightness at the center and darkness at the edges. Rectangular light distribution, through its asymmetrical design, creates a specific distribution pattern at 20° (vertical) and 50° (horizontal), resulting in a more uniform light distribution across the coverage area.
It is clear that the primary advantage of rectangular light patterns lies in their ability to significantly improve light utilization efficiency and lighting uniformity, making them particularly well-suited for lighting needs in long, narrow areas such as roads and corridors.
Therefore, choosing the right light distribution for the appropriate lighting scenario is the key to achieving the desired result.
